KH

Basic info

KH stands for carbonate hardness.

pH swings can be detrimental to your aquarium, KH buffers your pH, preventing it from swinging. The higher your KH, the harder is to change/swing your pH. It’s important to note that pH and KH naturally go up and down together, because they directly link.

Some species need lower KH because of their species. A general rule of thumb is to keep your KH at 2DKH or more to retain more stable pH.

Deep dive

Carbonate hardness (KH) measure the amount of carbonate and bicarbonate ions in the water.

GH is often related to PH and KH because a lot of the stuff you would add to up GH also has the potential to raise KH. And KH raises pH
