Breeding

Guppies and Endlers are live bearers meaning they give birth rather then lay eggs.

Gestation period:

20-30 days

Depending on the temperature, diet and health of the female. Warmer water to speed up the process and colder can slow it down

Offspring count:

20-50 fry

Larger or experienced mothers can give up to 100

Guppies can breed with Mollies and endlers because they belong to the genera poecilia. Swordtails and Platys can breed because they are both in the Xiphophorus genera.

Origin

Guppies:

Guppies originate from northeast South America. Specifically, Brazil, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and some places in the Caribbean. they were discovered in the 1850s by a man named Robert John Lechmere Guppy, who they were then named after. They were later domesticated in the early 1900s by Europe, Japan in the US. Guppies were brought to different parts of the world, and can now be naturally found in different areas.

Endlers:

Endlers originally came from the Paria Peninsula in Venezuela. They were discovered in the 1930s by a man named Franklyn F. Bond, but were rediscovered in 1975 by Dr. John Endler in Laguna de Los Patos, Cumana, in northeastern Venezuela. They can also be found in nearby water, like streams and ponds. they were named after Dr. John Endler, hence “Endlers live bearer”. they were brought to the trade in 2004.
