Anatomy
Molting
Eukarya - Domain of life whose cells have nuclei
Animalia - animals
Arthropod - invertebrates with jointed exoskeletons
Malacostraca - Largest class of crustaceans
Atyidae - Family of crustaceans
Neocaridina - group of shrimp
Breeding
After molting a Neocaridina shrimp will mate. Then the female will hold onto their eggs in a pouch under their abdomen for 2-4 weeks, this is called being “berried”. While she is berried, she will use her “swimmerets” to aerate the eggs, this is called “brooding”. berried mothers may sometimes burrow if stressed.
This is not a Neocaridina, this is a caridina. But they molt the same.
Gestation period:
2-4 weeks
Depending on the temperature, diet and health of the female. Warmer water to speed up the process and colder can slow it down
Offspring count:
20-30 fry
Offspring survival rate:
High
Since there is no larval stage
Origin
Neos come from rice, patties, ponds, streams etc from China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. They were first described scientifically by Eugène Louis Bouvier in 1904. The shrimp were brought to the pet trade in 1990s.
